Closter is a borough in north-eastern Bergen County and was incorporated in 1904 from portions of the now-gone Harrington Township. A few months later, Harrington Park was created from portions of Closter, Washington Township and Harrington Township. While it was originally filled with sprawling estates and farms, it has now transformed into an upper middle class suburban town and a bedroom community of New York City.
Closter’s draw includes a top rated public school system (part of the Northern Valley Regional High School system) and a typically lower cost for land and properties compared to the neighboring Tenafly. Closter is nicknamed the “Hub of the Northern Valley” due to its central location in the valley.
Closter is just 15 miles from New York City and is serviced by NJ Transit Bus 167 and 177. Bus services are also available through Coach USA’s Red and Tan Lines via the 20 and 14E bus routes. Country routes 501, 502, and 505 run through Closter.
